“We wanted the box to feel like the shoreline at the end of our street — the tide coming in and out, and the people who keep coming back to it. Working across generations, we found we were painting the same memories from different decades.”

Why this mural was created

The team chose tidal patterns and estuary birds to celebrate West Alameda's relationship with the water, and to give a familiar corner a landmark that neighbors could recognize and gather around.

The neighborhood story

Residents shared stories of fishing off the estuary, walking to school along Willow, and watching the neighborhood change over the years. Those conversations shaped the colors, the birds, and the small hidden details tucked into the design.
